Underwood Stakes

The Underwood Stakes this year is being held at the Caulfield Racecourse and is the third Group 1 race of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is to be run on Saturday September 24th.

Race Details

The Underwood Stakes is run over a distance of 1,800 metres and is a weight for age race for horses three years old and more. The race attracts some of the best middle distance runners from around Australia, competing for prize money totalling $400,000. Because of the unusual length of 1,800 metres, the race is often used by trainers who want to bring 1,600 metre sprinters up to the longer 2,000 metre mark.

The Underwood Stakes has had a rather chequered history, having been run at all of the major Melbourne tracks since its’ inception in 1924. It has also been run at varying lengths from eight furlongs up to ten furlongs and has now settled at the equivalent of nine, being 1,800 metres.

Lead up races

This is another race that is used as a good lead up to the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate. It has been won by some notable horses in the past including Phar Lap, Heroic, Tobin Bronze, Ajax, Octagonal, and Northerly. Both Mummify, 2003 winner of the Underwood Stakes in 2003, and Elvstroem (2004) went on to win the Caulfield Cup, while El Segundo, the 2006 winner, took the 2007 Cox Plate. When considering your bets it is worth pointing out that this is not a great race for mares, the last winner being Tristarc in 1985 while carrying a very light 54.5 kilograms.

It is also worthwhile looking at the runners in the Makybe Diva Stakes, since seven out of the last 12 winners of the Underwood Stakes have used that race as a warm up event, while many have done the Makybe Diva/Underwood double.

Underwood Stakes day also doubles as Fashionista Ladies Day which gives the fairer sex the opportunity to display themselves in all their glory.

Doubtless, all the online bookmakers will be trying to outdo each other with their offers for the Underwood Stakes, so keep an eye out for the best deals.
