Cox Plate

One of Australia’s racing highlights, the W. S. Cox Plate, is being held at Moonee Valley on Saturday October 22nd as the second last of nine races on the day, and following the previous night’s meeting which included the Manikato Stakes.

The Cox Plate is the major weight for age race held in Australia with prize money totalling over $3,000,000. It is the second richest race in Australia, surpassed only by the Melbourne Cup. It attracts champion three year old horses from all over the world, and is run over a distance of 2,040 metres.

The Cox Plate is keenly anticipated by punters as it forms part of many doubles in the Spring Racing Carnival.  Most notably the Melbourne Cup. Six horses have achieved this double over the years – Rising Fast, Phar Lap, Nightmarch, Saintly, Might And Power, and Makybe Diva. Rising Fast’s achievement in 1954 is all the more impressive.  He also won the Caulfield Cup in the same year, the only horse in history to achieve this treble.

Lead up races

Coming, as it does, towards the end of the Spring Carnival there is a good number of lead up races to consider when thinking about your bet.  During September, the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1,600 metres). In addition to  The Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1,800 metres), which are both good indicators. Held a fortnight before the Cox Plate on Caulfield Guineas day are the Toorak Handicap (1,600 metres), the Yalumba Stakes (2000 metres), and the Caulfield Guineas itself (1,600 metres).

The main aim of many runners in the Cox Plate will be the Melbourne Cup at Flemington.  Some may choose to run their horses in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes, which is run over 2,000 metres, in the interim.
