Weekend Sports Betting Guide – 3/4 August 2018

MLB – Friday

Yankees at Red Sox

3 Aug, 9:10am
Odds: Red Sox $1.83, Yankees $2.02
It’s time for Yankees/Red Sox baseball in a crucial series for the AL East. The Yankees are trying to catch the rampaging Red Sox and they’ll need to win the majority of games against them to achieve that. The away side will head to Fenway after their 3 game winning streak was broken by the Orioles in a 7-5 loss. The Red Sox come off a rest day and they played in a tough series against the Phillies previously at home. They split the series as both games well under 5 total runs. The Red Sox have easily been the best team in Baseball this year, especially at this venue. They’ve won 38 of 53 games and rank as the 2nd best scoring team when playing at home. They also won 2 of 3 against the Yankees in the last series at Fenway in April. In the pitching battle, Brian Johnson will take the ball in-place of the injured Chris Sale. Johnson has been excellent lately, allowing 0 earned runs in last 2 outings, which total 10.2 innings. So he’s capable of stopping the Yankees lineup, which is missing Aaron Judge to injury. CC Sabathia will pitch for the away side. He holds a 4-0 record against them since 2017 and holds a 2.48 ERA in those games. With this pitching matchup, the total runs looks a tad high at 10 runs. The Red Sox haven’t been overly impressive at the plate lately and CC should put in another dominant outing to keep this close and low scoring.
Best bet: Under 10 runs $1.86

Orioles at Rangers

3 Aug, 10:05am
Odds: Rangers $1.69, Orioles $2.22
The Orioles will head to Texas with a good streak of form (finally). They’ve won 5 of their last 7 and come off a 7-5 win over the Yankees. Their batting lineup has been on fire as they’ve scored 6.5 runs per game in their last 10. So while they haven’t scored many runs on the road this season (3.47 per game), they should turn it around in Texas. The Rangers are back at home after a tough 5 game road-trip against the Astros and D-Backs. But they showed good signs as they won 4 of 5. The one thing the Rangers have excelled in this season is scoring runs at this ballpark. They rank 6th in the Majors with 5.07 runs per game. So the betting angle should be the overs here. The last 4 games at this venue saw the total reach 10 or more runs. The last meeting between these two sides was also a 6-5 scoreline in Baltimore. When they met at this venue last season, the total averaged 10 runs, with the last game totalling 16. In the pitching matchup, Cashner of the Orioles has been up and down this season. He holds a 3-9 record with a 4.33 ERA. Gallardo of the Rangers gave up 8 runs in his last outing against the Orioles.
Best bet: Over 10.5 runs $1.82

Giants at Diamondbacks

3 Aug, 11:40am
Odds: Diamondbacks $1.56, Giants $2.50
The Giants and D-backs rivalry will continue this Friday as they meet in Arizona. For the away side, they’ve strung a few wins together lately, albeit against the Padres in extras. But winning form is the key. The D-backs have won 7 of their last 10 and lead the NL West division at the moment. But the Giants have their number this season as they’ve won the last 4 meetings and swept them in the last series at this venue. Looking at this pitching matchup, we’ll get to watch two quality starting pitchers go to work. Madison Bumgarner will pitch for the Giants. He’s been so unlucky against the D-backs as run support has been an issue. He’s lost 4 straight starts against them, despite allowing just 8 total runs in 27 innings pitched. He’s also coming off an 8 inning / 6 hit ballgame against the Brewers. Meanwhile, the home side will send ace Zach Greinke to the hill. In his last 7, his ERA sits at an impressive 1.16. He’s gone 7 or more innings in his last 3 and recorded 13 strikeouts in his last home outing. He also loves pitching against the Giants with a 2.20 ERA since 2016. So in this matchup of quality pitching, the unders should be the play. The average total at Chase Field is 6.16 when these two sides meet. This should be low scoring once again with the unders getting up.
Best bet: Under 7.5 runs $1.82

Rugby Union – Grand Final

Crusaders vs Lions

4 Aug, 5:35pm
Odds: Crusaders $1.09, Lions $7.50
The Grand Final of the Super Rugby season will see the Crusaders take on the Lions at AMI Stadium on Saturday night. The Crusaders are looking to finish a dominant season and the bookies agree, giving them just $1.09 odds to win the title. They’ve won 16 games in a row and easily defeated their two opponents in the finals. They started with a 40-10 win over the Sharks. Last week, they knocked out the Hurricanes with a convincing 30-12 victory. They’re the best scoring team in Super Rugby when they play at home. In defence, they allow just 17.9 points on average per game. So the Lions will have their work cut out for them. They’re appearing in their 3rd straight Super Rugby final and will be desperate to finally breakthrough. However, I don’t see them upsetting the Crusaders. After going 14-1 last season, they went 9-7 in the regular season and struggled for consistency. Especially on the road where they won just 3 of 8 games. They have played in 3 straight at home and easily beat the Bulls, Jaguares and Waratahs to reach this final. However, the trip to New Zealand will be the difference. They lost against the Highlanders and Hurricanes in their last road-trip to NZ. They’ve also lost the last 2 at this venue by large margins. So I can’t back against the Crusaders here. While they have won their last 4 by 13+, I think the 1-12 margin is good value for a Grand Final. The two sides have played in a 1-12 margin in the last 2 meetings.
Best bet: Crusaders 1-12 $3.30
