Weekend Sports Betting Guide – 13/14 July 2018

MLB

Washington Nationals at New York Mets

13 Jul, 9:10am
Odds: New York Mets $2.85, Washington Nationals $1.44
The Nationals head to Citi Field on Friday for a divisional clash against the Mets. Both sides are 4-6 in their last 10 but the Mets will face a tough ask against Max Scherzer. He dominated them at this venue last season, recording 2 straight starts with 10 strikeouts and 7 hits over 14 innings. While his 2-4 win-loss record in his last 7 starts this season doesn’t look great. The Nationals batting lineup hasn’t provided him with run support. His ERA over that time is 3.00, which is respectable. The main problem for the Mets seems to be home games. They hold a 16-30 record at Citi Field and rank last in the Majors for runs scored in home games (3.04). They’ve also conceded just over 5 runs per game at Citi Field. The Nationals actually hold a better record on the road compared to games at Nationals Park. They’re pitching rotation has kept sides to just 3.76 runs on the road as well. So it’s hard to see the Mets scoring enough runs to get near Washington. Which should see the Nationals winning by 2+ runs in the end.
Best bet: Nationals -1.5 $1.94

Tampa Bay Rays at Minnesota Twins

13 Jul, 10:10am
Odds: Minnesota Twins $2.02, Tampa Bay Rays $1.83
After his MLB All-Star snub, Blake Snell of the Rays will have something to prove when he takes the mound in Minnesota. With a 2.09 ERA on the season and a 12-4 win-loss record, he’s been dominating batting lineups all season. In 4 straight starts, he’s pitched 7 or innings with just a total of 14 hits allowed in those 28.2 innings. He also beat the Twins earlier this season, going 7 innings again with just 5 hits allowed. So I’m confident he can continue his form on the hill. The Rays also have a 3-0 record against them and beat Kyle Gibson 10-1 in the last meeting. Gibson has given up 3 earned runs in 2 straight starts and earned 4 runs in the loss against the Rays. So with the Rays ridding a 5 game winning streak, I can see them winning this contest with Snell on the mound.
Best bet: Rays WIN $1.83

Rugby Union

QLD Reds vs Sunwolves

13 Jul, 7:45pm
Odds: QLD Reds $1.25, Sunwolves $4.00
Both the Reds and Sunwolves season is over so they’ll be playing for pride in this clash. Previously, the Reds hurt the Rebels finals position with a 37-23 victory at this venue. The win halted a 5 game losing streak and the Reds will look for revenge against the Japanese. QLD were crushed 63-28 in May over in Japan. But the Sunwolves don’t travel well. They’ve never won a road game in Super Rugby and allowed a massive 77 points against the Waratahs last week. The Reds don’t have the same kind of attack so this should be closer. They rank 14th in Super Rugby for points scored at home but have conceded 37 points on average. Also, the previous meeting at Suncorp ended in a 10 point margin so there is hope for this Sunwolves defence. So in the end, I can see the Reds holding on for another win to end the season via a 1-12 margin.
Best bet: Reds 1-12 $3.00

Highlanders vs Rebels

14 Jul, 3:15pm
Odds: Highlanders $1.17, Rebels $5.00
The Rebels head across to New Zealand for a tough matchup against the Highlanders. The Melbourne side couldn’t get over the Reds last week but with their season pretty much on the line, this should give them motivation. If they win, they make the finals for the first time in Super Rugby. If they lose, they’ll have to await other results. Meanwhile, the Highlanders are in the finals with a 9-6 record and they’ve won 6 of 7 at home. Previously at this venue, they beat the Hurricanes 30-14. They are coming two crushing defeats to the Crusaders and Chiefs. However, the Rebels don’t have the same lineup. They’ve also never lost against them at this venue. Last season, they thrashed them by 13+ and it’s hard to see that changing. The home side is ranked 5th in Super Rugby for points scored at home and also lineup strongly in defence. They’ve won 2 of their last 3 at home by 13+ and that seems like the best value bet.
Best bet: Highlanders -13.5 $1.90

Waratahs vs Brumbies

14 Jul, 7:45pm
Odds: Waratahs $1.40, Brumbies $3.00
The Waratahs host the Brumbies in the last game of the season. The home side is assured a top 3 finish and come off a 77-25 crushing win over the Sunwolves. However, the Brumbies own a better defence to keep this close. The Brumbies could also still earn a spot in the finals with a win and other results going their way. They’re coming into this clash with 3 wins from their last 4 and they just lost to the Chiefs by 5 points last week. They also have a good record at this venue with 2 straight wins. It’s unknown whether the Waratahs will rest players so that’s another factor to keep in mind. So I don’t mind the Brumbies at the line considering their form at the moment.
Best bet: Brumbies +7.5 $1.90

Tennis

Serena Williams (USA) at Julia Goerges (Germany)

13 Jul, 12am
Odds: Julia Goerges (Germany) $3.60, Serena Williams (USA) $1.29
Serena Williams continues her quest for the Wimbledon title with a semi-final matchup against Julia Goerges from Germany. It’s been an incredible run by Serena as she makes her way back from pregnancy last year. Arguably the greatest ever Female tennis player, she’s been back to her best so far during the tournament. Down a set in the Quarters, she roared back with a comeback victory over Giorgi. She’s dropped just 1 set in her last 5 wins so Goerges will face a tough challenge here. The 29-year-old German knocked off Bertens last game to continue her journey. She made the semis back in 2016 and will be aiming for her first ever Final appearance in any Slam. Like Serena, she came from behind after losing the first set 6-3. She won a tough second set 7-5 and finished the stronger with a 6-1 win in the third. She’s played in a few tough wins on the way and that could hurt her against Serena. Williams has also won all 3 meetings, including a straight-sets win at the 2018 French Open. They last met on Grass in 2011 with Williams winning 6-1, 7-6. So I can see this matchup going the distance and the over total games getting up. This bet occurred in both their Quarterfinal games and I think both players will be desperate to reach the final. Williams is making a statement after returning to the tour after giving birth and Goerges has the motivation of reaching her first career Grand Slam final.
Best bet: Over 20.5 games $1.67
