Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne City FC

Friday, April 27, 2018 @ Newcastle
Odds: Jets $2.50, City $2.50

Jets Form:

The Newcastle Jets are back from the week off and will look to reach their first Grand Final since 2008. They acutally haven’t made the finals since the 2008 Grand Final so Newcastle fans will be roaring on Friday. This season, the Jets went 8-2-4 at home and they scored 26 goals in those 14 matches. Before the finals, they trashed the Mariners 8-2 so they’ll need to continue their goal scoring form. In season 2017/2018, they finished just behind Sydney FC in goals scored. In the backline, they conceded 1.4 goals per game and they ranked equal 3rd in goals allowed. Andrew Nabbout and Dimitri Petratos were the leading goal scorers for the Jets as they both scored 10 goals.
Last 5 Matches:
WON by 6 goals – Jets 8, Mariners 2 – Round 27, 2018
LOST by 2 goals – Jets 0, Glory 2 – Round 26, 2018
LOST by 3 goals – Jets 0, City 3 – Round 25, 2018
LOST by 3 goals – Jets 2, United 5 – Round 24, 2018
WON by 1 goal – Jets 1, Phoenix 0 – Round 23, 2018

City Form:

City are coming off a fairly comfortable 2-0 victory over the Roar at home in the elimination finals. It was a tight match until City opened the scoring in the second half. Nick Fitzgerald capped the win with a goal in the 91st minute which sent City into the next round. They now head to Newcastle and they’ll be looking for their first ever Grand Final spot. Bruno Fornaroli will be a key player to watch for City as he’s one of the best strikers in the A-League. He also scored the first goal against the Jets in the last meeting. Dario Vidosic is another player to watch as he scored a brace against the Jets in the 3-0 win early this month.
Last 5 Matches:
WON by 2 goals – City 2, Roar 0 – Elimination Finals, 2018
LOST by 1 goal – City 1, Phoenix 2 – Round 27, 2018
WON by 1 goal – City 1, Mariners 0 – Round 26, 2018
WON by 3 goals – City 3, Jets 0 – Round 25, 2018
WON by 3 goals – City 3, Wanderers 0 – Round 24, 2018

Head to Head

They last met in early April and City thrashed them 3-0 at this venue. Newcastle has not beaten City in the last 4 meetings. This will be the first ever finals meeting between the two sides.

Last 2 Meetings:

City won by 3 goals – Round 25, 2018. City 3 – Jets 0
Draw – Round 18, 2018. 2 – 2

Prediction:

This should be a very close final and the odds say the same. William Hill has given both sides $2.50 to win this match. The Jets will obviously have two main advantages after getting the week off and they’ll be at home. But City beat them 3-0 in this clash a few weeks ago so they should be confident. So I do think this will be a high scoring game. Both sides can easily score 2 or more goals. The over total is also a perfect 9-0 in the last 9 meetings between these two sides. It also wouldn’t surprise me if this matchup went to penalty goals.

Sydney FC vs Melbourne Victory

Saturday, April 28, 2018 @ SFS
Odds: Sydney $1.70, Victory $4.25

Sydney Form:

Sydney FC return from the week off and they have definitely earnt a home final against the Melbourne Victory. In season 2017/2018, they easily finished first on the ladder by 14 points. In 27 matches, they held a 20-4-3 win-draw-loss record. They ranked first in goals scored (64) at an average of 2.4 goals per game. They were equally as good in the backline where they allowed just 22 goals in 27 games (0.8 per game). So they will be confident of beating the Victory. At home in their last 2 seasons, they’ve lost just once in 29 matches. This season, they scored 36 goals at home in 14 matches, while just conceding 13 goals. Bobo will be their player to watch in this one. He dominated the A-League with 27 goals and will take home the Golden Boot at season’s end. He also scored the winner against the Victory in the last meeting.
Last 5 Matches:
WON by 1 goal – Sydney 1, Victory 0 – Round 27, 2018
WON by 3 goals – Sydney 3, United 0 – Round 26, 2018
WON by 1 goal – Sydney 3, Glory 2 – Round 25, 2018
WON by 1 goal – Sydney 2, Mariners 1 – Round 24, 2018
LOST by 1 goal – Sydney 1, Roar 2 – Round 23, 2018

Victory Form:

The Victory were down 1-0 against United last match but a stunning goal by Besart Berisha with a few minutes remaining sealed their spot in the semi-finals. Leroy George opened the scoring for the Victory with an easy header before Berisha scored a bicycle kick that was un-defendable. So they’ll head to Sydney with some confidence of upsetting the best team in the A-League. But they were an average team on the road in season 2017/2018 as they recorded a 6-2-5 record. Which included just 18 goals scored in 13 away matches. Overall, the Victory did finish as the 3rd best scoring team. They have a strong forward lineup and that will be the key against the Sky Blues.
Last 5 Matches:
WON by 1 goal – Victory 2, United 1 – Elimination Finals, 2018
LOST by 1 goal – Victory 0, Sydney 1 – Round 27, 2018
WON by 1 goal – Victory 2, Phoenix 1 – Round 26, 2018
WON by 2 goals – Victory 3, Wanderers 1 – Round 25, 2018
LOST by 1 goal – Victory 0, Glory 1 – Round 24, 2018

Head to Head

The two sides met recently before the finals and Sydney were victorious 1-0 at home. They have not lost against the Victory this season and beat them in the Grand Final last season. The Victory haven’t won agains them since 2016, which spans 8 matches. They’ve also lost the last 4 away matches against them.

Last 2 Meetings:

Sydney won by 1 goal – Round 27, 2018. Sydney 1 – Victory 0
Sydney won by 2 goals – Round 18, 2018. Sydney 3 – Victory 1

Prediction:

The Big Blue is always a great contest between these sides and the added pressure of a Grand Final spot will make this a must watch game. Sydney FC have easily been the best side in the A-League this season and as a result, they’re the warm favourite in this battle. Melbourne weren’t overly impressive against Adelaide last week but with Berisha up forward, anything can happen. However, I’m just going to side with the home side. They have the wood over the Victory and should enjoy home field advantage.
Sydney FC WIN ($1.70)
