Melbourne City FC vs Brisbane Roar FC

Friday, April 20, 2018 @ MRS
Odds: City $1.85, Roar $3.75

City Form:

Melbourne City is coming off a pretty disappointing 2-1 loss against the Phoenix. But they had secured 3rd spot on the ladder so it didn’t really matter. City finished the season as the second-best defence in the league and that will be the key against Brisbane. They’ve also enjoyed playing as the home side with a 7-2-5 record. At home, they’ve only conceded 15 goals in 14 matches. Ross MacCormack is their leading goal scorer with 14 this season.
Last 5 Matches:
LOST by 1 goal – City 1, Phoenix 2 – Round 27, 2018
WON by 1 goal – City 1, Mariners 0 – Round 26, 2018
WON by 3 goals – City 3, Jets 0 – Round 25, 2018
WON by 3 goals – City 3, Wanderers 0 – Round 24, 2018
DREW – City 1, United 1 – Round 23, 2018

Roar Form:

Brisbane Roar reached the finals with a close 3-2 victory over the Glory. After conceding the first goal, Brisbane dominated the Glory in the end. They needed the Wanderers to lose or draw to make the finals and the Wanderers lost against United in the final match of the season. This season, the Roar were a poor side in front of the net with just 33 goals scored in 27 matches. But after scoring 3 goals against the Glory, they should be somewhat confident against City. They’re also ranked 3rd in the A-League away ladder as they won 6 of 13 matches on the road. Brisbane has been a good finals side in the A-League so they are capable of an upset. It just depends on their attack and if they can penetrate City’s stronger defence.
Last 5 Matches:
WON by 1 goal – Roar 3, Glory 2 – Round 27, 2018
LOST by 3 goals – Roar 0, Wanderers 3 – Round 26, 2018
WON by 1 goal – Roar 1, Mariners 0 – Round 25, 2018
DREW – Roar 2, Phoenix 2 – Round 24, 2018
WON by 1 goal – Roar 2, Sydney 1 – Round 23, 2018

Head to Head

The Roar will need to overturn a 7 year losing record in Melbourne against City. They haven’t won against them in Melbourne since 2010. In the last meeting, City beat them 2-1 in Brisbane. The last meeting in Melbourne was a 2-0 win for City.

Last 2 Meetings:

City won by 1 goal – Round 19, 2018. City 2 – Roar 1
Roar won by 2 goals – Round 7, 2017. Roar 3 – City 1

Prediction:

This is a tough match for the Roar after travelling to Perth and they’re now looking for an away win in Melbourne. City has a strong defence and they should keep the Roar’s attack quiet all game. Melbourne’s record over Brisbane is another reason to bet on City as they haven’t lost here against them since they were called the Melbourne Heart in 2010. So in the end, I’ll back the home side to get over the line.
City WIN ($1.85)

Melbourne Victory vs Adelaide United

Sunday, April 22, 2018 @ MRS
Odds: Victory $2.00, United $3.40

Victory Form:

Melbourne Victory lost a close contest against Sydney 1-0 last week. So they finished 4th on the ladder and earned a home final against United. After a slow start to the season, Melbourne finished off strongly. They’re ranked 3rd in the league for goals scored and equal 3rd for goals allowed. They went 6-3-5 at home this season and scored 25 goals in 14 matches. Besart Berisha is the key in the forward line and he scored 13 goals this season. Before this final, they also have to play Shanghai SIPG on Wednesday, so they’ll likely rest a few players for that clash. In the end, Melbourne should be confident of winning at home as they’ve been strong at AAMI Park in the A-League finals.
Last 5 Matches:
LOST by 1 goal – Victory 0, Sydney 1 – Round 27, 2018
WON by 1 goal – Victory 2, Phoenix 1 – Round 26, 2018
WON by 2 goals – Victory 3, Wanderers 1 – Round 25, 2018
LOST by 1 goal – Victory 0, Glory 1 – Round 24, 2018
WON by 3 goals – Victory 5, Mariners 2 – Round 23, 2018

United Form:

Adelaide finished off the season with a 3-2 win over the Wanderers at ANZ Stadium. They crushed the Wanderers finals hopes and they’ll look to do the same in Melbourne. In season 2017/2018, Adelaide finished 5th on the ladder and will face a tough challenge in Melbourne on Sunday. They weren’t a great scoring team this season with just 36 scored in 27 matches. They also struggled on the road with a 6-2-6 record and were outscored 22-16 in those away matches. But they should step up in the finals and the rivalry with the Victory should keep this match closer than the odds say.
Last 5 Matches:
WON by 1 goal – United 3, Wanderers 2 – Round 27, 2018
LOST by 3 goals – United 0, Sydney 3 – Round 26, 2018
WON by 2 goals – United 3, Phoenix 1 – Round 25, 2018
WON by 3 goals – United 5, Jets 2 – Round 24, 2018
DREW – United 1, City 1 – Round 23, 2018

Head to Head

Melbourne thrashed Adelaide 3-0 in the last meeting at this venue. Previously at AAMI Park, Adelaide won 2-1. They also drew and beat the Victory in the earlier meetings which were in Adelaide. The last meeting in the finals was all the way back in the 2009 Grand Final where the Victory won 1-0. United is also 0-6 against the Victory in the finals.

Last 2 Meetings:

Victory won by 3 goals – Round 21, 2018. Victory 3 – United 0
United won by 1 goal – Round 10, 2017. United 2 – Victory 1

Prediction:

Melbourne’s last win over United was dominant so it’s hard to see the Victory getting beaten in this clash. Berisha loves scoring in the finals and Adelaide’s defence in away matches hasn’t been impressive. They also struggle to score goals against the Victory. Melbourne also looked decent against Sydney last week and should enjoy home ground advantage on Sunday. To top it off, the Victory has never lost against United in the finals.
Victory WIN ($2.00)
