Mens 2018 Australian Open – Tournament Winner

Roger Federer is the massive favourite to take out the Australian Open once again in 2018. He won the tournament last year after defeating Nadal in 5 epic sets. A few of his contenders are struggling with injuries, so he’s going to be hard to beat. Andy Murray has already withdrawn and Nadal has troubles with his knee again. He also lost at the Kooyong Classic warm-up tournament. Djokovic has also had issues with injury over the last couple of months and fitness will test him. Dimitrov made the semifinals last year and will be a player to watch. Del Potro is a veteran to look out for. He loves hard-court tennis and beat Federer at the US Open last year. Nick Kyrgios is the best placed Aussie and won the Brisbane International this season. He does have a knee issue though, which could hurt him as the tournament progresses. An interesting player to watch is South African Kevin Anderson. He reached the US Open final last year against Nadal and has won 6 of 7 matches on hard court this season.

So looking at the field, this is Federer’s tournament to lose and we can’t see that happening. This will likely be his last Australian Open and he’ll be ready to win for one last time. Argentian Del Potro is the outsider to watch as he performs well on hard-court.

Best Bet: Roger Federer ($2.60)
Best Aussie: Nick Kyrgios ($17)
Outsider: Juan Martin Del Potro ($17)

Womens 2018 Australian Open – Tournament Winner

The Women’s draw is very open this year with no Serena Williams and currently, three players are paying $9 to win. So that opens up the field for an outsider. The Women’s side is generally full of early round upsets so that is something to keep in mind when betting on this winner.

Karolina Pliskova is coming off a Quarters appearance here last season and will be looking to go further in 2018. Simona Halep is the current World number 1 but she has been knocked out in the first round in back to back Australian Open’s, so she’s overpriced at $9. Garbine Muguruza made the Quarters last year and went 29-12 on hard-court last season. She did retire with cramps in Brisbane which is concerning in the Melbourne heat. Maria Sharapova usually performs well in Melbourne and she likes hard-court tennis. Britain’s Johanna Konta is one to watch. She’s made it to the Quarters and Semi-Finals in recent years. She’s also 9-2 in her career at the tournament. The darkhorse is Venus Williams. She lost the final to her sister last year and will be flying the Williams flag by herself this year. She’s played here since 1998 and has made the Quarters or more in 9 of 17 appearances.

In the end, Venus Williams offers value for $23 and is worth a shot as the best outsider. But we do like Sharapova as she has an impressive record in Melbourne. She trains hard and will be ready to prove her doubters wrong.

Best Bet: Maria Sharapova ($12.00)
Best Aussie: Daria Gavrilova ($101)
Outsider: Venus Williams ($23)
