Horse Racing Betting Tips – Caulfield Cup 2017

Read through our form guide for the Caulfield Cup and our best bets for the race on Saturday at Caulfield.

3. Johannes Vermeer (2)

T: A O’brien J: B Melham (54.5kg)

Johannes Vermeer is the clear favourite for the 2017 Caulfield Cup. Last start in the Caulfield Stakes, he finished a close second and should be fitter for the run in this one. In his last crack at the distance, he finished second as well in Leopardstown, Ireland. He’ll be very tough to beat on Saturday.

1. Humidor (7)

T: D K Weir J: Damian Lane (56kg)

The Darren Weir trained gelding won the Makybe Diva Stakes in mid-September. But he has been inconsistent, finishing 8th in the Memsie Stakes and 6th in the Lawrence Stakes. Can run a place though.

11. Bonneval (14)

T: M Baker & A Forsman J: K Mc Evoy (52.5kg)

Bonneval missed the start in the Caulfield Stakes and will be hoping for a better run in the Cup. He’s beaten Hartnell and Gailo Chop this prep and he’s been in outstanding form this season. He’ll be up there near the finish for sure.

16. Amelie’s Star (13)

T: D K Weir J: Craig Williams (51kg)

She is coming off a victory in the Bart Cummings Cup and will be a tough runner in this field. Amelie’s Star is also unbeaten at this distance, so she’s a good bet here.

15. Harlem (1)

T: D & B Hayes & T Dabernig J: C Schofield (51.5kg)

Harlem has a good shot at this distance having placed in four of five starts over 2400m. He won at Caulfield in his last start at the track as well.

4. Jon Snow (6)

T: M Baker & A Forsman J: S Baster (54.5kg)

Jon Snow is coming off a third place finish in the Caulfield Stakes and he likes the distance. He won the ATC Derby over 2400m in APril this year and he’s a good runner over a long distance.

7. Ventura Storm (4)

T: D & B Hayes & T Dabernig J: D Oliver (54kg)

Finished behind Winx last start in the Turnbull Stakes, which isn’t a bad start. 1-0 at the distance. Very good chance for the place.

9. Inference (11)

T: M, W & J Hawkes J: D Dunn (53.5kg)

5th in the Caulfield Stakes and hasn’t placed in last 5 races. Not much of a chance here.

2. Marmelo (10)

T: H Morrison J: H Bowman (55kg)

Good freshened record and good over the distance. Good chance for the place.

17. Lord Fandango (9)

T: Archie Alexander J: Ben Allen (50kg)

Two wins in a row, but goes up in grade. 3 wins from 6 starts at the distance. Not the roughest.

14. Abbey Marie (5)

T: M C Kent J: Beau Mertens (51.5kg)

First attempt at the distance and a 8th finish in the Caulfield Stakes. Can’t see an improvement.

10. Single Gaze (12)

T: N J Olive J: Ms K O’hara (53kg)

No placings in three tries at Caulfield but finished 4th in the Caulfield Stakes. Could jump into third with a good race.

8. Wicklow Brave (16)

T: W P Mullins J: J Moreira (54kg)

Oldest horse in the field and doubtful whether he can challenge the favourites.

12. Hardham (8)

T: D R Brideoake J: C Newitt (52.5kg)

Second in the Inglish Cup last start but a large step up in class here.

13. Boom Time (3)

T: D & B Hayes & T Dabernig J: C J Parish (52kg)

Jumps up in class and hasn’t shown much form lately. No chance.

6. Sir Isaac Newton (17)

T: Robert Hickmott J: Katelyn Mallyon (54kg)

No form to speak of and hasn’t won at the distance or the track in 4 starts. No chance.

5. He’s Our Rokkii (15)

T: D & B Hayes & T Dabernig J: L Nolen (54kg)

Has a good track record but no form over the distance and very rough at $126. No chance.

Caulfield Cup Prediction

It’s hard to back against Johannes Vermeer and she’s already come in from $5.50 to $4.20. So we’re backing him to take out the 2017 Caulfield Cup. We also like Bonneval and Amelie’s Star to finish just behind. The best outsider would have to be Ventura Storm.

Winner: Johannes Vermeer ($4.20) or PricePump ($4.60)
3 Leg Trifecta: 3, 16, 11
5 Leg Trifecta: 3, 1, 11, 16, 15
Best Outsider: Ventura Storm
